A Day in the Life of... a Master.

Yono Balawara is a Master for Arkstar Offshore who currently works on board Arkstar's Eagle 1 vessel. Yono is currently working out of Abu Dhabi, supplying rigs operated by Paragon Offshore — that are contracted by ESNAAD, who are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). We sat down with Yono recently and asked him some questions about his experience as a Master.

Describe some of the interesting things that happen during your time on board.
Since I became a seaman, I have experienced a more exciting and interesting life. I like my ship and my crew. The ship is my second home with my second family, because no matter where you come from in this job, we are one family. I can feel how far away I am from home, and how much I miss my family, but it’s my life. My life is my adventure and this profession is my destiny. There are two ways I find joy and smile — receiving my salary and the signing off time. Often we might be viewed in a certain way but we do not mind being judged as part of the seaman family.

How long are your working hours and are the hours very demanding?
Normal shift lengths aboard the vessel are 12 hours, but this can be flexible. Sometimes we work overtime. For me, 12 hours is not accurate because I am "on call" and on standby 24 hours a day, to keep vessel safe at all times.

What are some of the challenges in your role?
There are many challenges in my role. All decisions are in my hands. I must deal with all crew concerns in a calm manner. It is important to think before taking any action, to avoid mistakes. Being a Master is like being a parent, keeping children safe and helping them grow.

How do you relieve stress on board?
I keep in touch with God, I communicate with family, and I watch some movies.

What are some of the activities you do after your work shift?
I do some exercise, such as jogging on the deck. Sometimes we can fish on the deck, depending on weather and location. I can talk with my crew in the mess room, and take coffee breaks. The main activity is creating some of my life story.

Thanks for your time, Yono!

Next up, we'll be asking Anton Rivai about the life of a 2nd Engineer, don't miss it!
