Common mistakes to avoid when looking for a new job

The key to job searching is being careful. Be careful with what you write, what you say, how you apply to jobs and how you present your skills and experience in your CV. Done correctly, it will help you land a job. Done wrongly, and you could make your job search even more challenging.

Here are some of the most common mistakes job seekers make so you can avoid making them:

Lack of Focus

Your CV should clearly state why you are qualified for the position you’re applying for. You should create several versions of your CV that are tailor-made for jobs in different fields to show the hiring manager that you’re the right candidate for the job.

Not proofreading your CV and cover letter

Your CV and cover letter are your first chance to shine. Don’t ruin it with typos, ask someone to read your CV and cover letter before sending it. If you’re emailing the hiring manager, make sure you take the time to proofread before you send it.

Misunderstanding the role

Research the role carefully to make sure you fit the bill and tailor your CV and covering letter to show that you have the right skills and experience to do the job. When you get an interview, don’t forget to research into everything you can about the company beforehand. Showing that you’ve taken in interest in the company and know about the company’s values and mission will help prove that you are taking the opportunity seriously. Only applying for advertised jobs

Just because a job isn’t posted online, doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities at a company you really want to work for. Be pro-active and approach them directly to make your case. Make a list of companies you’d like to work for, emailing their HR department to inquire about current and upcoming jobs. Show them you want to be part of their long-term vision and aren’t just applying to everything.
