Health and Safety in House-Building -- How Do Your Behavioural Safety Policies Affect You?

It’s pretty fair to say that our evolution in Health and Safety is no accident – save for the odd lapse here and there! Derided or not (I suppose it is human reaction to rebel against those who make the rules – even if it’s just a little ribbing!), we ALL work better with the correct Health and Safety policies in place.

But those exact rules affect how we behave, how effectively we work, and how we get the job done. The right rules in the right place help us keep safe physically and just as importantly, mentally. Commercially, they get the job done and make sure everyone goes home safely.

I relate cycling to and from work as a potential danger for me - my work mates ask me why I don’t have more issues cycling into work down a mad busy road each day. I try to ride as safely as possible and make myself as visible as possible – even a big six feet 2 inches lanky streak of recruitment consultant can get lost to a driver on a busy main road! I feel safer when I know someone can see me. Those around me feel safer when I’m following the rules. The more we’re all working together, the less chance I’m going to eat tarmac... although if I pick a fight with a Fiat Panda I reckon I could hold my own.

And teamwork is really what it’s all about. A colleague who joined our team recently (he has a HSE Construction Recruitment background) said the one bugbear that Health and Safety Construction professionals have is their accountability – reporting in to someone who is really just ticking the boxes and not fully understanding where their skill-set can help the business.

Accountability, making your skill-set and knowledge count, working properly as a team.

I met with a house-building client yesterday based in the North West. Their Health and Safety Coordinator plays has a key role already (although he works externally to the business); since the new Construction Director and Technical Director have joined forces, the client is ranked 6th out of 15+ regions in the country (that’s an improvement on 12th over the last year). 

They are passionate about their roles and they are passionate about their product (which is a 5* HBF house-building product). They’re striving to improve and that’s where you come in. They recognise that an internal Health and Safety Build Coordinator can now be crucial in playing an integral part in driving forward the business, refining existing procedures, and in helping to make the decisions that count.

Where you come in.

This is a brand new role within the business – the role is open to ambitious Health and Safety professionals with a background in house-build. It's going to be what you make it. With it being a brand new role it's open for you to come in and really make your own impression on what can be achieved. Health and Safety has to be your lifeblood – there is a job here for life... BUT only if you have the passion. They don’t just want you to work your hours, they want what you put in place to invigorate the business over time.

They want your input, from strategy to technical to construction. They want you to put ideas forward within the business that they can implement for further success. This is already an Award-Winning business – three of their sites are currently pending for H&S Awards – and they want you to have the ambition and passion to improve the already improving.

From site safety visits, NHBC regulations, pre-tender H&S, and environmental impact to toolbox talks, HSE quarterly meetings, and liaison with sub-contractors – they have taken the advice and now they want you to take the responsibility.

About you….

Ideally you’ll come from a Health and Safety developer house-building background. If you have a NEBOSH and IOSH that’s great. If you can walk into an interview and demonstrate the enthusiasm and energy that this role requires then that’s even better.

The guys you’re seeing are very open regarding salary – what you bring to the table depends on what case they can make for your expertise.
