How is Covid-19 still affecting the technology recruitment sector?

In September 2020 we sat down with Zain Hussain, Divisional Manager of the WRS Technology division in Singapore to get an insight into the impact of Covid-19 on the recruitment sector. Intrigued to see how things have changed since then, we caught up with him this week to find out more.

Do you feel the impact of Covid 19 on the recruitment sector has changed since September 2020?

I think we are all glad in one way or another to see the back of 2020. Since September 2020 we have seen a decent uptick in client enquiries for talent. HealthTech, FinTech, Ecommerce continue to grow at a rapid pace, though certain challenges remain due to travel restrictions. Most technology organisations are competing for a similar pool of local talent, which will continue to be the same in the near future. Organisations are more buoyant about adding headcount and we envisage a steep increase following Chinese New Year.

Are you seeing a surge in demand for tech jobs as businesses continue their digital transformation?

Technology talent is in very high demand in Singapore. The core technology companies are growing, along with various other industries having to utilize modern technology to digitally transform. We are seeing increased demand for Data Science, Analytics, Product Management, Machine Learning and Software Engineering related roles.

What are your predictions for the sector in 2021?

I believe we are going to see a surge in technology jobs as we start 2021. Traditionally, most companies ramp up their head count after the CNY and as per a recent survey, one in five Singapore employers expects to increase recruitment in 2021. More so, as most countries roll out their vaccine program, allowing bubble/green lane travel arrangements, it should bring back sectors who were heavily affected due to Covid. I envisage Singapore continuing to be a candidate short market, therefore giving local talent multiple job opportunities.
