How to find your perfect company fit

Posted by: Peter Jackson

You might think it’s impossible to know if a company is perfect for you until after you’ve landed the job. But with a bit of research - and asking some important questions - you can find your perfect company fit before you accept an offer. Use these five tips to finding a company you’ll love to work for.

Reach out to past employees

Do you know someone that worked at the company you’re applying to? Are you connected with any ex-employees on LinkedIn? If so, it can be helpful to reach out and ask for their opinion. Here are some good questions to ask:

  • How would you describe the culture here?
  • What should every new employee know about working here?

Do a quick search on LinkedIn for past employees, email and ask for their feedback about the company. Most people will be more than happy to give you a quick overview of their time with the business.

Research into the company

Check the company website, but don't just check out the home page. Look at the organisation’s social media presence, blogs, trade publications and every piece of information you can find to help uncover the company’s culture.

Look at review sites

These review sites allow past and present employees to give feedback about their experience within the company, you can find out the positives and negatives of a company, as well as glean some valuable information about the benefits it offers.

At the interview

Bear in mind that your interviewer was once on the other side of the desk. Ask what makes the company a great place to work? What is the best and worst thing about working there? Here are a few more suggestions on what to ask:

  • What does success look like in this role? And where have others in this role advanced to within the company?
  • What does initial training look like for this role?
  • How does training and development work here?
  • What would you change? If the interviewer says ‘Nothing,’ that’s a red flag!
