Important questions to ask about your probation period

Posted by: Chloe Jordan

When you start a new job as a permanent employee, there’s a strong chance your new employer will put you on a probation period to ensure you’re right for the role. A probation period is also a brilliant way to see if the company and role is right for you, but it’s important to know about your rights during your probationary period.

What does being on a probation period mean?

Probationary periods are defined periods of time that you as the employees are exempt from certain contractual items, most importantly the notice period required for termination. The probationary period allows both you and your employer to see if you are a ‘good fit’ and to make things easier if the other party wish to terminate the contract of employment.

At the start of the probation period you and your manager should discuss:

  • Objectives – what is the employee expected to achieve in the job during the probation period and thereafter
  • Core values of the organisation and expected behaviours
  • Any developments needed to help the employee do the job
  • How problems with performance will be addressed
  • The standards of regular attendance expected from the employee
  • When the probation period will be reviewed

Top questions to ask your employer about your probation period:

  • How long will my probation period last?
  • What are my entitlements while I am on probation?
  • What happens if I don’t pass my probation period?
  • Do I have dismissal rights?
  • Can my probation period be extended?
  • What happens if I decide to leave during my probation period?
  • What happens at the end of my probation period?
