International insights: Saudi Arabia opportunities

Posted by: Peter Jackson

The previous instalment of our international insights covered Kurdistan and the opportunities that exist for experienced personnel within the energy sector.

In this edition, we shine a light on Saudi Arabia and the opportunities that are on offer.

Peter Jackson, Recruitment Consultant in the Energy Division, provides us with the answers.

Where is Saudi Arabia and what are the main Energy projects that are located there?

Saudi Arabia is located in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is bordered by the Red Sea to the west, Yemen and Oman to the south, the Persian Gulf, Qatar and United Arab Emirates to the east, and Kuwait, Iraq, and Jordan to the north.
The main projects in Saudi Arabia are oil and gas exploration and production operations carried out by Saudi Aramco, a state-owned oil & gas operator.

What kind of opportunities exist?

Significant opportunities exist there across exploration, production, operations and EPC spaces. The Marjan Oil field expansion is a $15 billion project which will start-up in Q2 of 2023 and is currently at the EPC stage. Other projects include the Al Fadhili gas plant which is a grassroots gas processing facility with a total capacity of 2,500 MMSCFD and the Berri Oil field expansion located partly onshore and partly offshore in the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia which will increase production capacity to 550,000 barrels per day of Arabian Crude Oil and 2.5 BSCFD of gas.

What kind of rotations are on offer?

For permanent office-based workers, they’ll work Sunday – Thursday, 9-5. For offshore workers they’ll work four weeks on and four weeks off, or two weeks on and two weeks off.

What kind of accommodation is on offer?

There’s a wide variety of accommodation on offer, covering single, bachelor and family status. You’ll receive a relocation package; housing is provided on campus, but you can choose to live in other locations.

What is the pay like?

Pay is highly competitive and comes with a lot of benefits.

Is Saudi Arabia a mature region for Energy projects?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has the second largest proved reserves of oil in the world and produced on average 11.9 million barrels per day. As it continues to invest heavily in its oil and gas industry. Saudi Arabia is a long-term world champion of the hydrocarbons industry. While Vision 2030 plans to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, it does not mean the end of its oil and gas economy, quite the opposite.

How safe is Saudi Arabia? What is the political climate like?

Saudi Arabia is a safe place to work and travel around, however The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to within 10 km of the border with Yemen.
Saudi Arabia is undergoing a very strong political, economic and social transformation, represented by the government’s Vision 2030 reform programme. First announced in 2016, it plans to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and develop public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation and tourism.
