Life on site – WRS Q&A

Ever wondered what it’s like to work on a mining site? We sat down with a candidate we recently placed in West Africa and asked him about what life is like there.

When and how did you decide you wanted to work on site?

Working on site was more of a natural progression, than a conscious decision, as I had been brought up on a farm with large mechanical equipment, which I had been taught to operate and maintain from a young age.

What’s one misconception people have about working on site in the mining industry?

One misconception of working on a mining project is that you earn large amounts of money for little effort, when the reality is that its usually quite a physical and mentally demanding job, working fairly long hours, but the salary and scope of work make it a great job!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

For me personally (given that I work in West Africa) the most challenging parts of my job, is to motivate, train and orientate our team to ensure we meet International standards of professionalism.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is overcoming my daily challenges and hitting safety, and production targets with my team. Giving practical support to NGOs can also be very interesting and satisfying.

Why do you love what you do?

I love the challenges that every day brings, its high octane, and relentless, given that most mines work 24/7.

What are some of the activities you do after your work shift?

I take part in sporting activities, such as squash, boxing, skiing, motocross and mountaineering.

Describe some of the interesting things that happen during your time on site?

There are so many interesting things that happen on site, from having to recover machines that have become “bogged” or have been involved in a collisions, to meeting high level Government ministers who want to visit our operations.
