Seafarers are required to hold specialist maritime certification to work at sea. As part of a new feature, WRS are outlining the role of every rank on-board and the minimum entry requirements.

In this edition, we’re going to look at the requirements and responsibilities for a Master (Captain).

The Master is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, including its legal compliance, crew management, navigation, safety and security and cargo operations and for the persons on board.

One of the most important duties for a master is ensuring compliance with the vessel’s security plan as required by the International Maritime Organisations ISPS Code. The security plan is often customised to meet the needs of each individual vessel, which outlines the duties including conducting inspections and searches, maintaining restricted spaces and responding to threats from hijackers and pirates.

Working under the Master is the Chief Officer, Second Officer, Third Officer and Cadet Officer.

Certification requirements (all must be valid including those that had previously no expiry date):

  • Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Equivalent Competency – specified to rank and flag of vessel
  • GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress Safety System)
  • Designated Security Duties training
  • ENG1 or equivalent Medical
  • First Aid at Sea or Medical First Aid
  • Advanced Fire Fighting
  • PSCRB (Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats)
  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • STCW Elementary First Aid
  • STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
