Minimum Requirements for Seafarers: Cook

The last instalment covered the minimum requirements for Offshore Engineers to work onboard vessels. In our latest edition we will be looking at the requirements and responsibilities of a cook.

One of the most important and often neglected to mention professions on ships is that of the ship’s cook. The ships cook plans, prepares and serves meals that are both delicious and nutritious for the entire crew onboard the vessel. The cook determines the timing and sequence of operations that are required to meet serving times. They are also responsible for galley and equipment inspections for cleanliness and overseeing proper storage and preparation of food. Other responsibilities may include:

- Taking inventory of stores and equipment
- Keeping galley and mess room clean
- Keeping account of all provisions and stores
- Supervising mess and galley personnel
- Managing the ships stores
- Supervises the loading and storing of food

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

All certificates must be valid including those that previously had no expiry date.
- Ship Cook Certificate of Competency 
- ENG1 or equivalent Medical
- STCW Basic Safety Training A-VI/1
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques – All covered by STCW Basic Safety Training A-VI/1
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities - All covered by STCW Basic Safety Training A-VI/1
- STCW Elementary First Aid - All covered by STCW Basic Safety Training A-VI/1
- STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting - All covered by STCW Basic Safety Training A-VI/1
- Proficiency in Security Awareness
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSC & RB) other than Fast Rescue Boats sometimes required
- Medical Care sometimes required
- Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (Designated Security Duties training is now increasingly required by certain companies)
- Basic Food Safety & Hygiene or HACCP trainings are now increasingly required, but not a minimum requirement.
