Seafarers are required to hold specialist maritime certification to work at sea. The last instalment covered the minimum requirements for a Master (Captain) to work on a vessel. In this edition we’re going to be looking at the requirements and responsibilities for a maritime crane operator.

The Maritime Crane Operator is responsible for operating a mobile or stationary crane to lift, move, position and reposition loads. The operator controls crane functions by depressing buttons and foot pedals as well as manipulating levers. The crane operator will also be required to load and unload from trailers and support vehicles. When operating the crane, the operator receives direction on deck to determine the required load movement. Crane operators typically work under direct supervision and are required to follow appropriate safety procedures and maintain logs of vehicle repair status and working hours.

To be successful as a Crane Operator, you should operate cranes efficiently, taking charge of all safety aspects, cleaning and maintaining the hoisting mechanisms. Ultimately, a good Crane Operator should set and maintain a standard of accuracy, be able to work in extreme weather conditions, and operate the crane according to verbal, written or signal instruction.

Certification requirements (all must be valid including those that had previously no expiry date):

  • Crane operating stage 2/3 license
  • Seaman Book
  • Basic Safety Training
  • Sea Services Certificate
  • BOSIET/FOET
  • Medical
