Oil & Gas in Malaysia

29/03/17

Thanks to the work put in by our teams in Singapore and the UK, we have been able to carve out a place for ourselves in neighbouring Malaysia. Malaysia has long been touted as the next big thing in Oil & Gas, and that really came into effect last year when a number of major operators relocated their regional headquarters from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur – including Subsea 7, McDermott and Technip (Financial Times, 27 March 2016) due to the lower costs of property in KL.

Malaysia has around 4 billion barrels of oil held in offshore fields, and 83 TCF of natural gas, so it’s no surprise that it’s hot property right now. One huge project under construction at the moment is the RAPID Project – or the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development Project. RAPID is located at the Southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, due east of Singapore – at Pengerang in Johor. It’s well located here because of its proximity to deepwater ports.

Once completed, the project will produce petroleum products – right now phase one of the project is due for completion by the first quarter of 2019. Once complete, RAPID will cover 2,000 hectares and will be responsible for the production of 9 million tonnes of petroleum products and 4.5 million tonnes of petrochemicals each year.

The RAPID project will provide a major boost to Malaysia’s economy and the Construction phase is expected to create a significant number of jobs – on completion, it’s estimated that 4,000 permanent roles will be created (The Star, 21 March 2016).

WRS is currently one of the key providers to the RAPID Project. We have been working on the project for the last 2 years+ from the Civils into the Construction phase. We are now working alongside a number of key clients – EPCs and Subcontractors – to develop the early stages commissioning teams for 2017.

We are working with a major EPC as sole provider of expatriate and local personnel as well as providing work permits and compliant payroll solutions, as well as mobilisation and demobilisation, accommodation and on-site assistance.

If you would be interested in working on the RAPID project through WRS, we are accepting CVs across all disciplines including:

Project Direction & Management
Engineering Management
Project Controls
Process Management
Interface Coordination
Construction, Commissioning & Procurement
Quality (QA/QC)
