Progression in Recruitment - What does it look like at WRS?

Posted by: Sharon Dunleavy

It’s a great time to join WRS! We are in the middle of a digital transformation project which will see us revolutionise the way we work. Last year, we restructured our business, which has led to improvements in our internal processes and saw us reach a record turnover in 2020.

Recruitment at WRS is a rewarding career option, but it requires a lot of focus and determination to achieve success. You’ll need to be able to utilise a multitude of skills, not least communication, time management and persuasion. Building and maintaining long lasting relationships is key. Then you need to use these relationships to understand how to offer the best solutions to both candidates looking for work and businesses recruiting staff. The way we engage with our customers has changed over the last 10 years and now we have the use of new communication platforms such as video technology and social media to enable us to interact with our client base. Embracing technology is paramount for the modern Recruitment Consultant: it provides more efficiency and the ability to work from any location.

Recruitment is a career that can offer rapid progression, fast-tracked promotions and a far quicker route to the big money than most other industries.

How quickly can you progress in recruitment?

It’s vital for recruitment companies to set out clear guidelines on opportunities for progression so you can understand what your future could look like and, crucially, what you need to do to achieve promotions. At WRS we do just that, providing a transparent progression plan which is visible for our team members (it’s blown up and stuck up on a wall in our UK and Singapore offices). We make it clear that promotions are based on consistent performance and also demonstrating the WRS DNA that makes our employees unique. That’s all about team work, determination, diligence and hard work.

Let’s look at a real-life example. Oliver Green began his career at WRS as a Trainee Recruitment Consultant for our Energy division in September 2018, starting his journey learning the technical aspects of recruitment. In just four months, he was showing the drive and determination to succeed by smashing his target for CVs sent by 180%. He was still a trainee in the first quarter of 2019 but already closing both contract and permanent deals. It was clear to both his manager and the WRS HR team that he was achieving great things and was ready to move to the next stage of his career. In May 2019 he received the well-deserved promotion to Recruitment Consultant.

Like many other agencies, WRS makes it clear what our financial expectations are for you to achieve success, but we also believe in the development of the individual. Their success is our success! It takes time to become established in the industry and building a reputation and personal brand is an important part of succeeding in the long term. Establishing a network and building relationships pays off when it comes to your industry profile and persuading contacts to work with you. Oliver certainly showed he had achieved this in the last half of 2019 and throughout 2020 beating his ‘jobs added’ KPI by 320 percent! Clearly, he was building a great network of contacts and was providing a high level of service. In line with the WRS progression chart and taking into consideration Oliver’s KPI results and personal development success, he was ready to make the second move in his career in the space of two years. He was promoted to Senior Recruitment Consultant in February 2021. His focus, drive, determination and dedication are a credit to him and serve as a great example of what can be achieved in a short time when those traits are enhanced with high quality training, super mentoring and extensive knowledge sharing from our ‘community’ of highly experienced consultants and managers.

So, what’s next for Oliver?

The path that unravels for him from here is focused on providing opportunities to learn about leadership and management. He might decide that this is not the career he wants to embark on, but he will be given the opportunity to try by mentoring a junior colleague. For those who don’t want to go down the management route, there are further opportunities to earn promotions and pay rises based on a consultant’s individual success and Oliver’s next step could be to Principal Consultant. This kind of role would draw on what he already does, but offer him more rewards for his success.
