What Do ROV Pilots Do?

In the fast-paced world of offshore operations, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) have become indispensable. Whether surveying the seabed, inspecting critical infrastructure, or carrying out complex underwater repairs, ROV pilots are the skilled professionals behind some of the most technically demanding work in the industry. If you’re considering this career path, here’s what you need to know.

What Is an ROV Pilot?

ROV pilots operate remotely controlled submersible vehicles from the surface, typically aboard a vessel or platform, using sophisticated control systems to navigate depths that would be impossible or unsafe for human divers. These vehicles are fitted with high-definition cameras, sonar sensors, and hydraulic manipulator arms, allowing pilots to see, assess, and interact with underwater environments in real time.

It’s a role that sits at the intersection of engineering, problem-solving, and precision, and no two days on the job look quite the same.

What Does the Job Involve?

The scope of an ROV pilot’s work spans a broad range of subsea operations, including:

Inspection & Survey: Examining underwater pipelines, risers, wellheads, and structural components for signs of damage, corrosion, or wear. Pilots also conduct detailed seabed surveys ahead of installation projects or following environmental incidents.

Maintenance & Repair: Carrying out intervention work on subsea equipment, from tightening faulty connections to replacing components, all done remotely via the ROV’s manipulator arms.

Installation Support: Assisting with the positioning and installation of subsea infrastructure, including cables, templates, and subsea production control systems installed on wellheads to regulate flow and ensure safe, efficient operation.

Data Capture: Recording and logging high-quality video footage, sonar imagery, and sensor data that feeds into engineering reports and regulatory documentation.

On larger projects, pilots work as part of a broader subsea team alongside engineers, supervisors, and vessel crew, so strong communication and teamwork are just as important as technical ability.

Skills and Qualifications

ROV piloting is a technical discipline, and employers look for a combination of formal qualifications, practical aptitude, and the right personal attributes.

From a qualifications standpoint, many pilots enter the industry with a degree or HND in mechanical, electrical, or electronic engineering, though relevant hands-on experience in hydraulics, electronics, or control systems can also open doors. You’ll need to hold a valid offshore medical certificate and complete an offshore survival course such as the Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) before working on any offshore project.

Beyond the paperwork, the best ROV pilots tend to share a few key traits: excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness (manoeuvring a vehicle in pitch-black water at depth demands both), a methodical approach to problem-solving, and the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure. Comfort with shift patterns and working away from home for extended rotations is also essential. Offshore life isn’t for everyone, but for those who take to it, the rewards are considerable.

Why Consider a Career as an ROV Pilot?

The offshore industry continues to evolve, with growing demand for ROV operations across oil and gas, offshore wind, and subsea infrastructure. For those with the right skills, it offers genuine career progression, from ROV Pilot Technician through to Senior Pilot, Supervisor, and beyond, alongside competitive salaries and the opportunity to work on projects all over the world.

It’s a career that’s as technically challenging as it is rewarding, and for those with a passion for engineering and the marine environment, it’s hard to beat.
