Which Certifications Do You Need to Work Offshore?

For most UK and European offshore roles you need three things as a minimum: valid OPITO-approved safety training (BOSIET for new starters, FOET as a refresher), a current offshore medical, and for North Sea work, MIST. Offshore wind roles usually require GWO Basic Safety Training, and vessel-based roles need STCW. Beyond that, the right certifications depend on your discipline and region.

A career offshore offers exciting projects, international travel, strong earning potential and long-term progression. Whether you are heading to an oil and gas platform, a North Sea wind farm or an FPSO overseas, one thing is non-negotiable: holding the right qualifications.

Offshore certifications are not administrative box-ticking. They are fundamental to safety, compliance and employability. For employers, properly certified personnel reduce safety incidents, downtime, compliance risk and project delays. For candidates, current certification improves employability, opens up global opportunities, supports higher earning potential and speeds up mobilisation. In a competitive market, being mobilisation-ready often sets candidates apart.

What is OPITO certification and why does it matter?

OPITO, the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation, sets internationally recognised standards for offshore safety and emergency response training. In the UK and much of Europe, OPITO-approved certification is the benchmark, and most operators require it as a minimum for offshore work. Because OPITO standards are consistent globally, certificates are recognised across operators regardless of which approved centre delivered the training, so the best provider for you usually comes down to location, availability and scheduling.

BOSIET and FOET

The Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training course, BOSIET, is the standard starting point for anyone new to offshore work. It covers offshore safety induction, sea survival, helicopter safety and escape, firefighting and self-rescue, first aid and emergency breathing systems. Many centres deliver a combined BOSIET with CA-EBS training included.

Returning workers need the refresher course, FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training), typically every four years. Without valid BOSIET or FOET, mobilisation to many installations simply will not happen.

MIST

Minimum Industry Safety Training focuses on safe working practices and hazard awareness offshore, covering risk assessment, permit to work systems, hazard identification and environmental awareness. For candidates targeting North Sea opportunities, valid MIST is usually essential alongside BOSIET.

Do you need GWO training for offshore wind?

Usually, yes. As offshore wind grows across the UK and Europe, Global Wind Organisation training has become the standard for wind projects, required either alongside or instead of OPITO certification. GWO Basic Safety Training covers working at height, sea survival, fire awareness, first aid and manual handling.

Professionals moving between oil and gas and renewables increasingly hold both OPITO and GWO qualifications, which gives them flexibility across sectors. If you want to futureproof your offshore career, dual certification significantly broadens your options. Browse our current offshore wind jobs to see what employers are asking for.

What other certifications improve offshore employability?

Offshore medicals

Most offshore roles require a valid offshore medical certificate. In the UK this is typically the OEUK offshore medical (formerly known as the OGUK medical). Overseas projects may require different medical standards depending on location and operator. Medicals usually need renewing every one to two years.

STCW certification

For marine and vessel-based roles, STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) is often mandatory. It applies to seafarers on commercial vessels worldwide and covers fire prevention, sea survival, personal safety, first aid and security awareness. STCW is commonly required on installation vessels, FPSOs, support vessels and marine operations. See our maritime jobs for current vessel-based roles.

CA-EBS training

Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System training prepares workers for helicopter emergency escape scenarios. It is commonly integrated into BOSIET and FOET courses and remains an important requirement for many operators.

NEBOSH and safety leadership

For supervisory and leadership roles, NEBOSH General or International Certificates, incident investigation training, advanced first aid and safety leadership programmes all add weight. These are particularly valuable for HSE professionals, supervisors and management-level personnel.

Which technical certifications matter for your discipline?

Core safety training gets you offshore. Discipline-specific competence gets you hired. The most valued additions by discipline:

  • Mechanical engineers: pressure systems safety awareness, API standards, hydraulic systems, offshore lifting awareness and root cause analysis.
  • Electrical and instrumentation engineers: CompEx certification (often mandatory for hazardous area work), IEC 61508 and 61511 functional safety, PLC and DCS systems, and HV/LV switching authorisation.
  • Process engineers: HAZOP and LOPA training, process safety management, flow assurance and live offshore production experience.
  • Structural and civil engineers: offshore structural codes, fatigue and fracture mechanics, installation analysis and marine operations awareness.
  • Subsea and pipeline engineers: pipeline design codes, subsea production systems, corrosion and cathodic protection, vessel operations and ROV awareness. Demand remains strong across subsea and ROV roles globally.
  • Drilling and wells engineers: IWCF or IADC well control, well integrity training and barrier management. Well integrity remains one of the highest-risk areas offshore, so these qualifications are critical.

Do offshore certifications work in every country?

Mostly, but check regional requirements. OPITO dominates the UK and European market and is one of the most widely recognised and transferable qualifications worldwide. Many Middle East operators recognise OPITO, though operator-specific requirements may apply. Australia, Singapore and Malaysia often run schemes aligned with or equivalent to OPITO standards. US offshore roles may require additional training such as HUET, H2S and local regulatory compliance courses.

WRS mobilises candidates in more than 90 countries and runs its own training centres in Iraq and East Africa, so our consultants can advise on exactly what a specific project or region requires. Our candidate information hub also covers mobilisation, documentation and compliance.

How long do offshore certifications last?

Typical validity periods are four years for BOSIET and FOET, one to two years for offshore medicals, and periodic refreshers for MIST. Expired certification is one of the most common reasons mobilisation gets delayed, so track your renewal dates and book refreshers early. Staying current means you are ready the moment the right contract appears.

Do soft skills matter offshore?

Hugely. Offshore projects involve multicultural teams living and working together in demanding environments. Employers consistently value communication, safety-first thinking, teamwork, decision-making under pressure, adaptability and cultural awareness. Candidates who combine current certification with strong behavioural competencies stand out.

FAQs

What is the minimum certification needed to work offshore in the UK?

Valid OPITO-approved BOSIET training (or FOET if returning), a current OEUK offshore medical, and, for most North Sea roles, MIST. Specific roles and operators may require more.

How long does BOSIET last?

Four years. After that, you complete the FOET refresher rather than repeating the full BOSIET course.

Do I need GWO or OPITO for offshore wind?

Most offshore wind projects require GWO Basic Safety Training. Some accept or require OPITO alongside it. Holding both gives you the most flexibility to work across oil and gas and renewables.

What is the difference between BOSIET and STCW?

BOSIET is the offshore energy industry safety standard for installation-based work. STCW is the international maritime standard for seafarers on commercial vessels. Vessel-based roles such as FPSO and installation vessel work commonly require STCW.

Does an expired certificate stop me from being mobilised?

In most cases, yes. Operators will not mobilise personnel without valid certification, and expired tickets are one of the most common causes of missed contract opportunities. Book refreshers before certificates lapse.
