Congratulations! You’ve been offered a new job, which you’ve decided to accept. Follow these simple tips to ensure you leave your current employer in a professional and amicable manner.
Resignation letter
The first thing you need to do is to write your resignation letter. In order to leave your job, you will need to put it in writing. Stick to the following advice on how to draft your resignation letter:
Keep it short – you don’t need to go into a lengthy explanation. If you need to disclose further information about why your leaving do so in a private conversation with your line manager.
Look at your contract – showing that you’ve looked at your contract to see how much notice you need to give will show that you’ve thought through your decision and helps avoids any delays.
Keep the tone professional – whilst you might be friendly with your manager it’s important that your resignation is dealt with in a professional manner.
Handing in your notice can sometimes feel uncomfortable but try not to let it make you feel nervous, you need to do what’s best for you and your career.
Book a meeting
Now you’re all set to leave your job, book a meeting with your line manager. Explain your reasons for wanting to leave and find out what the next steps are. Use this opportunity to find out what they would like you to do in terms of a handover/handling of your responsibilities.
Prepare for the counter offer
If your current employers really want you to stay, they may give you a counter offer in an attempt to get you to stay. It’s important to prepare for this situation by thinking clearly about your reasons for wanting to leave – would a pay rise or more benefits be enough to make you stay? Or, is it time to move on? You might not be able to make this decision until you’ve seen the counter offer, but just be aware that this could happen.
