Starting from 2nd April 2025, travellers planning to visit the UK will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding. Applications opened on 5th March 2025, so if you’re preparing for a trip to the UK, it’s essential to apply early to avoid any travel disruptions.
What is an ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a mandatory online permission for short-term visits to the UK. It applies to most visitors who do not currently require a visa. The ETA acts as a “digital permission to travel” but is not a visa itself and does not guarantee entry; UK border officials make the final decision upon arrival.
Who Needs an ETA?
You must obtain an ETA unless you are:
- A UK or Irish passport holder
- Already holding a valid UK visa or immigration status
ETA Cost and Validity
- The application fee is £10 (increasing to £16 from 9th April 2025).
- The ETA permits multiple visits, each up to six months long.
- It remains valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Application Timelines and Requirements
- Specified Non-European Countries: ETA required now for entry.
- Non-European Nationals: Can apply starting November 2024; ETA required from 8th January 2025.
- European Nationals: Can apply starting March 2025; ETA required from 2nd April 2025.
How Long Does It Take to Get an ETA?
Most applicants receive a decision within 3 working days, often sooner. Occasionally, processing may take longer, so apply well in advance of your travel.
How to Apply for a UK ETA
You can apply conveniently via smartphone apps or online:
- Apple App: UK ETA on the App Store
- Google Play: UK ETA – Apps on Google Play
- Government Website: Apply for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) – GOV.UK
Applications require:
- A valid passport
- Email address
- Payment via credit/debit card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay
The application process includes passport scanning, facial recognition and a brief questionnaire, all designed to make the process simple and secure.
Important Reminders
- The ETA system ensures enhanced security checks before arrival, but doesn’t remove the need for standard passport and immigration checks at the border.
- Travellers transiting through UK airports without passing through border control currently do not require an ETA.
- Children and babies travelling must also obtain an ETA.
- It is recommended not to rely on last-minute applications due to occasional processing delays.
Applying for your UK Electronic Travel Authorisation early ensures a smooth start to your trip and compliance with the latest travel regulations. Stay informed and prepare ahead so your next journey to the UK is hassle-free.
