The Role of Renewable Energy in Transforming the Construction Industry

Back to Blogs

The construction industry plays a pivotal role in both the world's economy and infrastructure. Despite its essential contributions, there is a widely recognized issue: the sector is a substantial contributor to carbon emissions, intensifying the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This, in turn, contributes to global warming and the onset of climate change. This blog explores the current state of the construction industry, its environmental impact, and the promising developments in adopting renewable energy.

The Environmental Challenge

The construction sector, contributes significantly to global CO2 emissions, with 11% coming directly from its activities and an additional 28% from existing buildings' operations. To effectively address climate change, substantial changes within this industry are imperative, presenting both challenges and opportunities.

Resilience Amidst Challenges

Despite the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the construction sector rebounded impressively. Public construction output was forecasted to rise by 3.7% in 2022 before growth of 4.5% in 2023 whilst private construction output was forecast to rise by 2.5% in 2022 and 1.4% in 2023. As demand surges and projects continue to progress, the industry faces a crucial juncture: whether to adhere to traditional practices or embrace sustainable alternatives in the face of environmental concerns.

Renewable Energy in Construction

The construction industry's gradual shift towards renewable energy is evident, with solar power leading the way. Fueled by the initiatives of tech and retail giants, American corporations are setting unprecedented records in the adoption of solar energy to fuel their operations. As revealed in the Solar Means Business 2022 report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), these companies now collectively contribute to 14% of the total installed solar capacity in the United States. The report, which tracks and analyses commercial solar adoption, named Meta, Amazon, Apple, Walmart, and Microsoft as the top five corporate solar users in America. Solutions, such as solar are emerging as cost-effective and efficient ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Such a simple change can lead to an extraordinary 80% lower greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen, a relatively new entrant in the renewable energy landscape, is gaining traction. In 2022, Siemens Energy, installed on an off-grid construction site in Lincolnshire, England, a hydrogen fuel cell system that serves the Viking Link Interconnector project. The Viking Link Interconnector project is a subsea link between Denmark and the U.K. The technology Siemens Energy installed on the site provided enough heat and power for the construction village during the project, removing the need for diesel generators.

With more and more companies installing hydrogen fuel cells on their construction sites, this indicates a promising future for this technology in the construction sector.

Expect More Clean Energy Systems in Construction

Every industry is looking for sustainable solutions to integrate into their operations as the goal for net zero 2050 approaches. This significant transition to clean energy will not happen overnight but incrementally. It'll be interesting to see how solar, wind, and hydrogen fuel cells become ubiquitous and how they transform construction for the better.

Impact on Jobs

As technology advances, concerns about job displacement in the construction sector arise. However, the focus on renewable energy aims to reduce CO2 emissions rather than replace human workers. While automation is underway, large-scale construction projects still rely heavily on human expertise. The integration of renewable energy is part of a broader movement towards sustainability, ensuring a balance between technological innovation and job preservation.

Toward a Renewable Construction Industry

While the construction industry has room for improvement on its journey to sustainability, the array of emerging technologies suggests a potential transformation. The sector must navigate the challenges and make informed decisions that prioritize the planet's long-term well-being. Embracing renewable energy is a critical step, and public willingness to accept short-term inconveniences for the sake of long-term planetary survival is essential.

As we stand on the brink of a greener future, the construction industry holds the key to significant environmental impact. With advancements in solar, wind, and hydrogen technologies, coupled with a commitment to sustainability, the construction sector has the potential to shape a more eco-friendly and resilient future. The choice is clear: to build not just structures but a sustainable legacy for generations to come.
